For more than 15 years, the women of Faith Lutheran in Quincy have cut, sewn and stuffed their ways into the arms of those in need of comfort. In the peace and tranquility of their homes, they have created handmade pillows for local hospital patients.
The Pillow Ministry is a testament to what happens when women lead with both skill and compassion. Each pillow begins with donated fabric - a patterned piece matched with a complimentary solid color - always chosen with intention. Volunteers cut, stitch, stuff, and finish each piece with the hope that the person receiving it will feel hopeful, supported and remembered.
Five dozen pillows are picked up periodically by a volunteer at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. Twelve of the pillows are a bit smaller and have been made specially for babies and children. The pillows are distributed to surgical patients at the hospital to assist and comfort during the recovery process. A small label ironed onto the pillow informs the patient that this pillow brings prayer and love from the women of Faith Lutheran Church.
In the past few years, the number of volunteers making pillows at home has dwindled, leaving many piles of fabric and bags of stuffing just waiting to be crafted into a comfort pillow. The WELCA group decided to incorporate pillow making into a few meetings a year. What makes this ministry particularly powerful is not just the finished product, but the community it creates among the women who gather to sew. New volunteers are welcomed with appreciation, experienced sewers teach newcomers how to cut fabric or thread a machine, how to stuff the pillow for the “best” fluffness, how to iron on the label and stitch the pillow closed.
